We are proud to announce that we have relocated our showroom to a new prominent address of 73-910 Hwy 111, Suite K, Palm Desert, CA  92260.  It was important to make it easier for our customers to find us and to offer a more enhanced shopping experience.  We have much more room to display our fine teak furniture and vintage sports products now and have noticed a remarkable jump in business activity as a result.  Not bad for a supposed slow economy.

Palm Desert is located in the heart of the beautiful Palm Springs, CA desert area.  The weather is generally perfect most of the time which explains why there are many major golf and tennis tournaments among many other festivities held here each year.  So it is a pretty good fit for our unique specialty business.  Please make sure to drop in our store and spend as much as you can afford.  Ha! TENNIS - Big Boom Or Bust?

Some will argue that the sport of tennis began around the 12th century in a crude form, but most historians agree that the modern version of tennis as we know it today began around 1860.  Tennis initially bcame popular among the UK elitist snobery, then spread throughout the world.  The game rules varied until around 1924 and really haven't changed much since.

During the 70' and early 80's disco period, tennis surged in popularity.  The woodie racquets were quickly becoming garage clutter and were being dismissed in favor of the new sleek metal frames, thanks mostly to Howard Head, an employee of Prince Tennis Equipment Co.

Out of respect for the deceased woodies, Wood-Joy, a La Quinta, CA company recently created giant size wooden tennis racquets. The sport of tennis may be in for another surge in popularity, partly because of the high cost of of golf these days, as well as chubby Americans finding tennis an appealing cheap, non-boring alternative to expensive fitness clubs.  Many tennis players of the 70's and 80's shifted into golf over time and are now returning back to tennis.  Additionally, the entire globe is now very acquainted with the sport of tennis, especially ping pong charged China and badminton influenced India.  With a combined population of over three billion, China and India alone could easily triple the popularity of tennis over time.  Imagine all the different unusual techniques of play that would evolve eventually from this growth phenomenon.

Art Umbrellas - Original Cool

Garrison Wayne – Artist

For more than ten years Garrison Wayne (resident of La Quinta, CA) has been hand painting his original and unique designs on market umbrellas for both residential and commercial use under the company name of CANVAS IN THE GARDEN. 

 

Garrison uses quality acrylic fabric with all-weather durability and paints uniquely on both sides of the fabric (mirror imaging) with exterior acrylic paint.  This technique (painting on both sides) provides full visual artwork underneath the umbrella as well as on the top side.  While you enjoy the shade of your umbrella, whether dining or just relaxing, the artwork just pops out there for your pleasure.  The acrylic exterior paints retain their color with UV exposure and are waterfast (no paint runs). 

 

You may cleanse these umbrellas by just hosing down with water in it’s open position.  In addition you may gently sponge with soapy water (similar to washing your car).  Simply rinse off any soap and then dry in its open position before storing away after the season. 

 

The frame is made of Asian hardwood, has eight ribs and comes in two sizes, seven and nine feet diameter.   For any table over 36” diameter, the nine foot size is recommend.  It is easy to raise or lower your umbrella with its simple rope and pulley system.  A metal pin holds it in place.  Options available are Aluminum tilting frames (9’ umbrella only). 

 

 

Garrison paints each umbrella individually and does not hire anyone else to assist him.  You can be assured when you purchase one of his umbrellas that you will be the proud owner of an original piece of art.

Additionally, we offer matching pillow shams.  They are also hand painted by Garrison with the same themes and exterior paints used on the umbrellas.  The fabric is heavy duty canvas.  They are sealed with an exterior weatherproofing agent.  In areas of extreme exposure to rain or dew it is recommended to store these in a dry location when not in use.  These pillows are sold unfilled to fit an 18” or 24” pillow form if purchased on-line and fully filled if purchased locally at our showroom.

• Wood is natural, organic, renewable, nontoxic, recyclable and bio-degradable. Turning a tree into sawn wood or veneer requires less energy and produces less pollution compared to the large amounts of electricity and heat needed to produce other materials. Teak is a remarkable long lasting wood, so here goes a little teak trivia....  The first outdoor teak benches were made from recycled decking from old sailing ships.  Many public parks in England are still furnished to this day with such teak benches, some of which are a century old.

Contrary to popular belief, Tectona Grandis (teak trees) is a deciduous hardwood tree brought by the Dutch to the dry, hilly terrain of Indonesia during Dutch colonial rule.  It is not indigenous to Indonesia, but rather a Dutch import which was then planted in the many plantations that are still in existence today.  It is noteworthy that the Dutch imported the original seedlings from Thailand in the year of 1816.

The Indonesian government is doing a reasonably good job managing and controlling the sustainable-yield practices of these trees and of course Wood-Joy requires that the teak used for its furniture be strictly harvested from these government controlled plantations.

So after factoring in that teak outdoor furniture can last around seventy plus years, the life cycle cost is very low.  Not bad considering the elegant and timeless classy look this furniture offers.  It is very common to see this furniture pass through a few generations with minimal maintenance.

If you are moved by sports nostalgia, you would be quite pleased with any of these big beauties.  We find while even working around these products daily that they can actually be very uplifting.  Of course we are a bit biased but there seems to be a common consensus of many of our valued customers that feel similarly. 

In March 07 Wood-Joy was an official exhibitor at the Pacific Life Open Tennis Tournament at Indian Wells, CA.  A big draw.  The aggregate attendance surpassed 300,000 during the two week event.  It was amazing to see the various expressions of those strolling by our exhibitor's tent.  I wish now we would have taken a series of video clips of the most outrageous reactions and comments.  And believe me, there were many!  The most popular comment was "WOW, those things are so cool".  Even though we love hearing those kind words, we look forward to what you may have to say.
